I’m trying to get to Tampa, Florida for Geekfest this year and I have to be honest, after traveling throughout the US and Europe this Spring meeting with editors the cash flow is not where it should be. In fact, the bank account is looking a bit dismal right now. There are some spectacular speakers this year and some really wonderful friends and colleagues will be attending. I also have family in St. Pete. I’d like to see my Aunt and Uncle but alas…after rent and food and assorted other expenses here in Mumbai…no cash. As the locals say:
Array boss? What to do?
Well, I approached Ms. Lyttle on AIM last night with an idea. I asked her if I could give a workshop on relocating to a foreign country, setting up a freelance business and making it work in exchange for a plane ticket. To her credit she didn’t laugh, at least not loud enough for me to hear her here in India. I’m sure Croslin heard her in Tampa. What did it sound like buddy?
OK back to the story. Ms. Lyttle says that she won’t give me the money BUT she will let me give the workshop if I can get my ass to Tampa for Geekfest. So I think what about community funded travel? Would it work? Would APAD help me to get to Geekfest? Today I got my first answer. Mr. Mitchell Franz has pledged $100.00 to get me to Geekfest. I need 900 more and I’m on my way.
I’m currently taking pledges to see how far we get in the next day or so. If I get close then I’ll send out my paypal address and I’ll see you in Tampa/St.Pete.
Desperate? Maybe. But I love my friends and would love to see Sam Abell speak.
